Report on the mission of IPCI France Europe representatives to Brazil from December 02 to 13, 2024

Mission schedule

Preparation and preliminary meetings (December 4, 2024)

Prior to the opening of the symposium, several exchanges took place near Ilhéus with key players:

  • Edmon Ganem - Owner of fazenda Nova Aurora, partner of Programa Pau Brasil.
  • Rui Rocha - Head of IFV (Instituto Floresta Viva)
  • Sophia Hirakuri - Cobsultant commissioned by the CITES Secretariat to write a report on the traceability of Pau Brasil.

Ilhéus Symposium (December 5-6, 2024)

The event brought together pau brasil specialists, scientists and professionals committed to the conservation and sustainable management of this precious species. Among the personalities met:

  • Dr. Daniel Piotto (UFSB) - Botanist specializing in pau brasil, organizer of the symposium.
  • Patricia Da Rosa - Botanist, researcher Escola National de Botânica Tropical /JBRJ, UERJ.
  • Maíra Fasciotti - Mass spectrometry analysis specialist, employed by INMETRO (Ministry of the Economy).

Encounters in Campina Grande (December 8, 2024)

  • Henry Guerra - Brazilian archaeologist and landowner.
  • State University of Paraíba (UEP), Center for Agrarian and Environmental Science, Lagoa Seca, Elida Barbosa Correa - Teacher, plant disease specialist.

Meetings in Natal (December 9-11, 2024)

  • Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), Selma Jeronimo - Teacher-researcher, Jose Daniel Diniz Melo - Rector of the university.
  • Franz Pareyn - General Coordinator of APNE (Associação Plantas do Nordeste), based in Goiana (Pernambuco State).

The trip provided an opportunity to strengthen exchanges between the various players involved in the preservation of pau brasil, to deepen scientific knowledge and to gain a better understanding of the issues linked to its traceability and sustainable management.
