In document E-Notif-2025-076.pdf, Brazil makes several requests to CITES Parties and relevant stakeholders, in particular bow makers. The main requests are as follows:
- Sharing of data on existing stocks: Brazil requests that Parties, including bow makers, share information on stocks of bows and sticks made from Paubrasilia echinata (brazilwood). Bow makers are specifically requested to provide data on the number of bows and their location by July 18, 2025.
- Improving documentation and combating fraud: Brazil calls for better documentation and increased efforts to combat fraud in the trade of Paubrasilia echinata wood bows. This includes the need to improve product traceability and transparency in the supply chain to prevent illegal trade in wood.
- Research into sustainable substitutes: Brazil encourages bow manufacturers to intensify research into sustainable alternative materials that could replace Paubrasilia echinata wood in the production of violin bows. This aims to reduce pressure on this endangered species and find alternative solutions for manufacturers.
These requests aim to strengthen the regulation of trade in Paubrasilia echinata and promote more transparent and sustainable management of resources related to bow production.
A survey will soon be released by the IPCI to respond to point 1. You will be informed of its publication very soon!
